Sensitive toothpastes – suitable for sensitive teeth?

Sensitive toothpastes promise relief for sensitive teeth. But not all of them are effective. Ökotest tested 24 different toothpastes for sensitive teeth and found, among other things, aggressive surfactants that can make the pain in the mouth worse.
Watch out for painkillers
Six of the toothpastes tested contained sodium lauryl sulphate. Although its thick foam makes it easy to rinse off dirt from the teeth, it can also irritate sensitive oral mucous membranes. It could also promote the development of aphthae, inflammations in the mouth. Critical polyethylene glycols and PEG or PEG derivatives, some of which can make the (mucous) skin more permeable to foreign substances, were also detected in the test.
Questionable ingredients
Titanium dioxide, maltodextrin and lactose were also found in the toothpastes tested. Titanium dioxide is said to have a mutagenic effect. Maltodextrin and lactose are both sweeteners that can promote the development of tooth decay. To permanently protect teeth from tooth decay, a toothpaste containing at least 1,000 mg/kg or ppm. fluoride.
