Incorrect allergen labelling can be life-threatening

Apr  4, 2021

Certain foods are triggers for allergies or intolerances. According to Regulation (EU) No. 1169/2011, there are 14 triggers for allergies or intolerances in the EU. These include:

  1. gluten
  2. crustaceans
  3. eggs
  4. fish
  5. peanuts
  6. soy
  7. milk
  8. nuts
  9. celery
  10. mustard
  11. sesame seeds
  12. sulfur dioxide and sulphites
  13. lupins
  14. molluscs

Consumption of or contact with these can cause symptoms such as mucosal swelling, nausea, vomiting, itching, skin rash and diarrhea in affected individuals. In severe cases, life-threatening anaphylactic shock may also occur.

The Food Information Regulation (FIC) states that consumers must be informed about the presence of potential allergens to ensure that those affected can choose products that are safe for consumption. According to Article 21 of the regulation, substances that trigger allergies or intolerances must be listed in the list of ingredients under the correct name and highlighted to stand out from the rest of the ingredients.

In trade, there are recalls time and again due to incorrect or even missing allergen labelling. This poses a major safety risk for allergy sufferers.

To ensure that you label your products correctly, the laboratories of the Tentamus Group support you with analysis and consulting services on the subject of allergens. Our Labelling Team will check the labelling of your products for you and the laboratories of the Tentamus Group will examine your food products for the presence of allergens using specific sensitive systems such as PCR, ELISA and enzymatics.
