The German Federal Office of Consumer Protection and Food Safety (BVL) announced that manipulations of olive oil and vanilla have been detected within the project OPSON IX.
Olive oil is one of the most frequently adulterated foods. According to Regulation (EC) No 1234/2007, three grades of olive oil are permitted in the EU:
- Extra virgin olive oil
- Virgin Olive Oil
- Lampant oil
Extra virgin olive oil must fulfill extremely strict quality criteria and 83 controls were carried out within the project. It was checked whether the samples were adulterated with other olive oils of lower quality or with cheaper oils (sunflower, rape, soybean oil).
Adulterations were detected in 19 samples.
Products containing vanilla are also often adulterated by replacing real vanilla with synthetically produced vanillin. A total of 208 checks were carried out and adulteration was found in 36 cases. For example, natural vanilla was replaced with ethyl vanillin, which is artificial and cheaper.
