Portugal sets maximum salt levels in bread in 2019

By January 1st 2019, Portugal will set mandatory levels for salt in bread. Then, no more than 1.3g  of salt are allowed in 100g of bread. This will decrease the following four years.

 

Plan – Maximum amount of salt in 100 g of bread:

 

  • 2019: 1.3 g
  • 2020: 1.2 g
  • 2021: 1.1 g
  • 2022: 1.0 g

 

 

 

 

 

 

Draft law:

 

All types of bread, except specialty breads with meat preparations and sausage-meat, will be covered by this law. According to the Portuguese government, bread and toast contribute most to Portuguese salt consumption. Within the National Health plan, Portugal aims to reduce the average amount of salt in food products by 10%.

 

“Excessive salt intake by the population is one of the greatest public health risks in Portugal and is linked to the development of a range of chronic diseases, in particular cardiovascular diseases, which are currently the leading cause of death in Portugal.”

 

A tax on sugar-sweetened beverages came already in force by January 2018 (this year).
