Citrus-Chlorpyrifos-ban-EU-2020

Chlorpyrifos – Ban across the EU

The insecticide chlorpyrifos may no longer be used in the entire European Union from the end of January 2020.

Chlorpyrifos is one of the most commonly used pesticides in agriculture, killing lice, fruit flies and other pests, and is used in fruit and cereal crops. Chlorpyrifos has been suspected of influencing human brain development for years.

Studies have shown that there can be genotoxic and neurological effects during development, which show health impairments in children.

Chlorpyrifos had been approved for use in the EU since 2006, but eight EU member states, including Germany, were prohibited from using chlorpyrifos since 2009.

In Germany, residues of chlorpyrifos are found every year in imported goods, e.g. in avocados from Peru or in citrus fruits from Greece. “Roy Sperling, Head of Instrumental Analysis of bilacon, confirms: “It is still one of the active substances that we detect the most in fruit samples.”
