Food contamination through use of disinfectants

The spread of COVID-19 has led to the increased use of disinfectants. Based on the current situation certain measures need to be taken to avoid sample contamination through disinfectants.

Due to the spread of the novel coronavirus, many people have started using copious amounts of disinfectants. These have an antimicrobic and antiviral effect, as they contain Quaternary Ammonium Compounds (QAC), Didecyldimethylammonium Chloride (DDAC), and Benzalkonium Chloride (BAC). These compounds were originally used as pesticides, now only as disinfectants, as they are no longer approved as pesticides. Using a pesticide multi-method these compounds are detected at Tentamus.

The Tentamus Group urges its customers to be careful in utilizing disinfectants when handling test samples. This is to prevent tests coming back with false positives when run through analyses. Disinfectants traces may enter a foodstuff during the following production chain steps:

  • Handing raw materials
  • The processing of the food
  • The packaging of the food
