Control of conventional and organic products in the agri-food sector

Francisco Carmona, Commercial Department of L.A.B. | Laboratorio Analítico Bioclínico, participated as a speaker at the VII Freshuelva Partner Forum 2019, where he had the opportunity to convey to the attendees the assessments and controls in terms of food safety that are being carried out in various international markets.

Francisco Carmona affirmed that a correct interpretation of the analytical results is the fundamental basis for verifying whether the fruits and vegetables tested, meet the respective requirements.

Their complex specifications in terms of maximum number of active ingredients, MRL (maximum residue limit) and ARfD (maximum amount of pesticide that can be taken in less than 24 hours without affecting health), as well as the fact that ARfDs are also in continuous study, review and modification, not only complicate treatment planning, but in any case require an appropriate and updated evaluation of analytical results.

The speech also explained the complexity of this issue, as well as the importance of having a reliable laboratory capable of adapting the way of calculating and evaluating compliance with these specifications for each situation.

As for the cultivation of organic products, the problems of secondary contaminants (such as chlorates, phosphonates, persistent or drifting pesticides, etc.) and how the different control and certification bodies for organic production in Spain or in other countries such as Germany (BNN) or the United States (USDA) deal with this issue were discussed. As well as the main differences in terms of the requirements and limitations established by these entities when considering a product as organic.
